<p>Ruthanne, thanks for brining in our capital "W" Word. God's purpose, will, and desire to create is often commanded in a word. i.e. "Light!" and there was light, etc. And again, physically enfleshed in the Word, Christ Jesus (recall O. Lee's comment at the start). I'm at a gathering right now and just heard one of our leaders pointing to the little bit of bread and little bit wine and little bit of water that we use for communion and baptism as little bits of physical "words" that carry all of God's grace. Little words all seeming to reflect both God's "yes" to us, and his "no" to the alternative darkness, and our reflected ability to "say" the same in word and action. God's "little" word began it all, bridges it all, and promises everything! Powerful stuff; thanks all.

"In the beginning was the WORD, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God, all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. . . And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father." - John 1: 1-5, 14.

The WORD that John speaks of is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is interesting to me that these words that we use to tell of the roles of the triune God (and fitting to be doing this on Trinity Sunday) are nouns that are created out of verbs. God is known as the Creator because he is actively creating; the Redeemer because he suffered the punishment of death in our place; the Sustainer because he breathes new life into us each day.

The "one little word" is only little because it is all we need.

I had asked this question in a small group and one of my friends in the group sent me this via email:

"When [my wife] and I got to our car Monday night, I turned to [her]and the told her the little word is NO."

That's an interesting thought, too... And few words are "more powerful than the "little" words of "yes" or "no"! And maybe the little word that defeats darkness or the "world's tyrant" is any word that indicates a turn from darkness or toward the light? Or, using the thought from wildstar's wife: any "word" inspired by the Light?

My wife says it is not the word that is important it is the speaker. She thinks that the power is in Jesus and not in the specific word, rather any word Jesus speaks is enough to defeat the enemy because it is Jesus speaking.

Thank you! These are great little words--and connected somehow. Could it be that the "little word" is somehow "metaphorical" for an idea, purpose, desire or will?

Well... the easy answer is "JESUS"! But that doesn't provide for much discussion!

How about "love?" Christ calls us to love those that hate us, and who could hate Christ-lovers more than "the world's tyrant?" In real life, I've found that it's true that often when my instinct tells me to fight back, taking a deep breath, and trying to love the other person (to the best of my ability), works almost every time. When it doesn't..... at least I feel better about it.
