This is an interesting and difficult passage and other portions of scripture do not really bring much light to the real meaning; this is another one of those imponderables to ask the Lord about when we are in heaven. But, that being said, I recall from past study that Jesus was speaking to either the souls of men from the time of Noah or to the fallen angles or both. The possible purpose to be; a demonstration of His victory, demonstrated through his death on the cross and resurrection.

Erman Lunder, a powerful man of God who just recently went to be with the Lord spoke of this time period in a very beautiful way. He belived that for each moment Jesus hung on the cross, he was performing a sort of suffering proclamation to those below. Jesus' descent, in this way, was not only a measure of witness to the dead, but encouragement for us. Erman also thought that since a second to us can be as a year to God, every second that Christ endured on the cross was as a year to him. Perhaps this leads to a deeper understanding of his passion - not only of the Father's love, but his passion for all - and a witness to the grace which allowed him to bear so great a burden.
However, sir, I cannot say that I am familiar with any deeper theological implications about this descent. I am only so learned as to understand that it happened, and it didn't last for long (whether it was a thousand years or a couple of hours) because the stone door didn't last too long.
